Every factory, shop and office is using energy and contributing to emissions. Across the whole UK economy, manufacturing and services account for a third of all emissions, and finding out which part is your share is as hard as finding out the exact source of the rain coming out of your tap.
However if you are someone who wants to live light you will not want to skate over a corner of your life that probably accounts for a quarter of your total climate impact.

Here are possible ways you could live

HAND-ME-DOWNS: The original source of free second hand stuff.  Where family friends and neighbours give you stuff they no longer need

NCT NEARLY NEW SALES

Not just for members, although you might get in 15 minutes early.  Get there well before it opens to snap up prime items, then hang around for the end where sellers reduce prices and even give stuff away. 

CHARITY SHOPS – you get second hand items plus make a donation to a worthy cause. Shooting Star in Whitton High Street and Teddington High Street has exclusive baby and children’s items.  They will take details of your wish list. 

FREECYCLE

- register to join your local group.  Members post lists of items they are giving away free to collectors.  Some groups allow you to post wish lists of your wanted items.

EFREEKO

like freecycle, but a national database of  free items to collect, or if you are prepared to pay for postage.

GUMTREE

some items for sale, some items given away.
